As employees at a company, we’re expected to carry out our tasks dutifully and ensure that it’s done to our boss’ satisfaction. And sometimes, this may require us to do certain things that are outside of our job description.
For one woman in Shanghai, China, she found herself without a job after she refused to follow through with her boss’ instruction to buy breakfast for him.
Told to buy breakfast for her boss every day
In a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the woman surnamed Lou, who was just hired at an educational institution, shared her experience on the social media platform Xiaohongshu (XHS).
According to Lou, her supervisor, known as Liu, demanded that she buy “hot Americano and an egg” for her every morning.
On top of that, she was also instructed to ensure that there was a bottle of water made ready to Liu to drink.
Woman gets fired, rehired after public outcry
Lou wrote that when she turned to a work chat group to express how she felt about Liu’s unreasonable demands, she found herself getting reprimanded by a group administrator.
To further add insult to injury, she was later fired from her job and told that she would not be receiving any compensation.
Feeling unjustly treated, Lou sought reimbursement from Liu, adding that the incident had left her feeling “helpless and absurd”.
Unsurprisingly, Lou’s situation triggered a wave of anger and outrage online, where netizens slammed the company for bullying its surbordinates.
On Sept 23, the company released a statement saying that Liu was dismissed for abusing her position and coercing workers into helping her with personal matters.
They also added that Lou was given back her old job but stopped short of revealing whether she would receive compensation for the ordeal she went through.
